The Southern Development Basketball League delivered exactly what a playoff week should: tight semifinals, a hard-fought bronze game, and a final worthy of the Hammer Cup.
Action opened on Thursday with two tense semifinal battles. Senglea Sentinels booked their place in the final with a narrow 78–75 win over Valletta Union. It was the kind of game that never really let up, with Valletta staying close all the way before Senglea made the key plays late.
The second semifinal was just as sharp. Limestone Five edged BC Birgu 1971 by two points, 86–84, in another game decided by small margins and strong nerves. With both Thursday matchups ending within a single possession, it was clear that the medal games would not be quiet ones.
Friday brought the final standings. In the bronze medal game, BC Birgu 1971 responded the right way after the semifinal loss and beat Valletta Union 90–79. Birgu played with real purpose, pushed the tempo well, and found enough scoring to take control when it mattered. Valletta showed plenty of fight again, but Birgu were stronger down the stretch and left with third place.
Then came the main event.
Limestone Five and Senglea Sentinels met for the title, and the final followed the script of the entire playoff week: close, physical, and decided late. Limestone Five came through 81–78 to seal the championship and take home the Hammer Cup. Just like in the semifinals, they held their nerve in the biggest moments and found enough composure at the finish to close the door.

That made it two clutch wins in two days for Limestone Five: first a two-point semifinal, then a three-point final. Championships are often won that way, not with easy runs, but with calm decisions, tough possessions, and belief in the last few minutes. Limestone Five had all of that this week.

Final playoff results:
Thursday, April 9
Senglea Sentinels 78–75 Valletta Union
Limestone Five 86–84 BC Birgu 1971

Friday, April 10

With four intense games across two days, the SDBL playoffs gave Malta a strong finish to the week and a deserving champion in Limestone Five.
